Das Institut für Sozialanthropologie der Universität Bern lehrt die Sozialanthropologie in ihrer ganzen Breite und setzt Forschungsschwerpunkte in den Bereichen Migration, Anthropologie des Staates, ökonomischer und ökologischer Anthropologie sowie Medienanthropologie. Ein Bachelorprogramm sowie drei Masterprogramme – darunter das spezialisierte Masterprogramm ATS („Anthropologie des Transnationalismus und des Staates“) sowie das internationale Masterprogramm CREOLE – bieten den Studierenden eine solide Grundausbildung und Möglichkeiten der Spezialisierung. Auf Doktorats- und Post-Doc-Ebene ist das Institut an mehreren interdisziplinären und interuniversitären Postgraduiertenprogrammen beteiligt.

Stefan Leins, Professor für ökonomische Anthropologie, wurde in den Rat für nachhaltige Anlagen der Alternativen Bank Schweiz berufen. Leins setzt sich seit vielen Jahren mit Fragen zu Markt und Moral auseinander und ist international bekannt für seine einschlägigen Studien zur Anwendung nachhaltiger Kriterien in der Marktanalyse. Sensitive Material: A Study of the Spiritual, sensorial and Legal Personality of Indigenous Artifacts, Within and Without Museum Collections.

David Howes is Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Founding Director of the Centre for Sensory Studies at Concordia University, Montreal as well as an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Law at McGill University. He was recently inducted into the Royal Society of Canada.
David Howes holds two degrees in law and four degrees in anthropology. He is a legal anthropologist, a pioneer of the anthropology of the senses, and a leading theorist in the interdisciplinary field of sensory studies. Howes is currently directing one research project called ‘Explorations in Sensory Design’ and another on ‘Sensitive Material: A Preliminary Reconnaissance of the Spiritual, Sensorial and Legal Personality of Indigenous Artifacts.’ Recent books include The Sensory Studies Manifesto (2022), Sensorial Investigations (2023) and Sensorium (2024).

The paper shows how Swiss commoners’ ontologies and identities are related to cultural landscape creation since the Middle Ages. However, their maintenance in the postindustrial world depends on the commoner’s specific bargaining power to deal with market and state pressures in order to face capitalist neoliberal uncommoning processes.
