The institute of Social Anthropology
With its five professors, approximately 350 students, 40 PhD candidates and numerous externally funded research projects, the Institute for Social Anthropology in Bern is one of the largest and most research-intensive institutions not only in Switzerland but in the German-speaking region as a whole. The institute receives public attention due to the research we do on currently relevant social issues such as migration, sustainable development and media anthropology.
Several faculty and inter-university PhD programs enable our doctoral candidates to actively engage in scientific exchange and form academic networks. For graduate and undergraduate students, the broad and intense teaching we offer in our four different degree programs (one bachelor and three master’s programs) as well as our good staff-student ratio make Bern an attractive place of study.
